INSIDER SECRET: This card is a good pick if your business spending habits change from month to month, because you’ll earn bonus points based on where you do most of your spending.
Amex business credit cards are very appealing to folks in the points and miles hobby because they do not appear on your personal credit report, so opening cards won’t hurt your chances of being approved for top Chase cards due to the 5/24 rule.
If you qualify for small-business cards, the American Express® Business Gold Card currently has a limited-time welcome bonus through November 6, 2019. You can earn up to $500 in statement credits by purchasing qualifying FedEx services in the first three months of account opening, which is a good deal for small businesses who do a lot of shipping. With this offer, there are no bonus points as part of the intro bonus, but you will earn American Express Membership Rewards points for your purchases.
Here’s our review of the American Express Business Gold Card.

Until November 6, 2019, the Amex Business Gold Card comes with up to $500 in statement credits for qualifying FedEx purchases made in the first three months of account opening. Normally, the welcome bonus includes Amex Membership Rewards points, but that’s not the case with this offer.
If you’re looking to earn points to unlock free travel, there are better travel credit cards to consider, especially because Amex only lets you earn the welcome bonus once, per person, per lifetime on a particular card. That said, if your business spends a lot on shipping, this could be a compelling deal.

Add Employee Cards
You can order cards for your employees and earn points for their spending, too. The first employee card costs $50 and any additional cards are free (See Rates & Fees). This also makes it easy to track employee expenses with spending limits, alerts and summary reports.
Is the Amex Business Gold Card Worth the Annual Fee?
The Amex Business Gold comes with an annual fee of $295 (See Rates & Fees). That’s no small amount of money, but if you can make the most of the welcome bonus you’ll come out ahead in the first year. This could be a winner for small business owners who generate a lot of spending or make use of the 25% points rebate.
If you’re a small business owner, you can apply for the Amex Business Gold card using just your social security number. You’re not required to have an EIN (Employer Identification Number) to apply.
Remember, to qualify for a business card, you just have to show the bank you’re aiming to make a profit, such as tutoring or selling items on eBay.
Also before you apply, remember that you only have the opportunity to earn each Amex card’s bonus the first time you open it.
How to Earn Points With the Amex Business Gold Card
The Amex Business Gold comes with excellent spending categories. You’ll earn 4 Amex Membership Rewards points per dollar on two categories where you spend the most each month (capped at the first $150,000 in combined purchases each calendar year, then 1 point per dollar):
Airfare purchased directly from airlines
US purchases for advertising in select media (online, TV, radio)
US purchases made directly from select technology providers of computer hardware, software and cloud solutions
US purchases at gas stations
US purchases at restaurants
US purchases for shipping
This is a nice change because you won’t have to choose you bonus categories before hann. Instead you’ll automatically earn 4x Amex Membership Rewards points per dollar on whatever two categories you spend the most on each month, and you will earn 1 Amex Membership Rewards point per dollar for everything else.
If you have lots of business expenses, you can do well with this card. Amex Membership Rewards points are very handy for free flights all over the world because you can transfer them to partners like Delta, Air Canada Aeroplan and Singapore Airlines.

Amex Membership Rewards points get you lots of travel flexibility, because if you don’t have set travel plans for a future trip, these transferable points give you the option to choose from multiple direct airline and hotel partners when the time comes. Plus, you’ll get access to other indirect partners thanks to airline alliances and partnerships.
Transferring points to partners will usually get you the most value for your Amex points. However, you can also redeem points at a rate of 1 cent each using Amex Pay With Points for flights through the Amex Membership Rewards portal without having to worry about blackout dates.
Plus, you’ll receive a 25% points rebate if you use your Amex points for flights booked with Amex Travel (up to 250,000 points back each calendar year). The rebate will kick in for first and business-class tickets, as well as coach tickets on your selected airline.
Here are a few ways you can use Amex points to unlockfree travel.
1. Cheap Award Flights to Hawaii
Alaska Airlines and Singapore Airlines are partners. This means you can transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Singapore Airlines, then book coach award flights on Alaska Airlines to Hawaii from West Coast cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle for only 12,000 Singapore Airlines miles.
That means by opening the Amex Business Gold, you’ll have enough points for a round-trip flight from the West Coast to Hawaii (24,000 Amex Membership Rewards points for a round-trip flight/4 points per dollar for spending in bonus categories), with plenty of points left over.

2. Delta Award Flights to Los Angeles, New York and Many Other Great Cities!
Folks traveling within the US can transfer Amex Membership Rewards points from the Amex Business Gold welcome bonus to Delta, then book award flights to fun cities like New York or Nashville.
Delta no longer publishes an award chart, but it’s possible to find cheap one-way coach award flights at the following prices if you’re flexible with your travel dates:
5,500 Delta miles for short-haul flights (i.e. Los Angeles to San Francisco)
10,000 Delta miles for medium-haul flights (i.e. New York to Atlanta)
12,500 Delta miles for long-haul flights (i.e. New York to Los Angeles)
And Delta frequently has fabulous sales, both domestic and internationally. We always tell you about Delta SkyMiles award sales here.

Keep in mind, you’ll have to pay a small excise fee to transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Delta because it’s a US airline.
3. One-Way Business Class Award Flight to Europe
If you’re looking to travel to Europe in style, you can transfer Amex Membership Rewards points to Air Canada Aeroplan and book a business-class award flight. Air Canada is part of Star Alliance, which means you can redeem miles for award flights on partner airlines like Lufthansa, SWISS and United Airlines.
A one-way business-class award seat from the US to countries in Western Europe (like Germany, Italy and Switzerland) costs 55,000 Air Canada Aeroplan miles. A similar one-way business-class flight could cost several thousand dollars if you paid cash, so the points you earn with your Amex Business Gold can save you lots of money.
Does the Amex Business Gold Card Have a Foreign Transaction Fee?
No. (See Rates & Fees)

The Business Platinum® Card from American Express is a souped-up version of the Amex Business Gold. Some benefits are similar, like a 35% points rebate when you purchase airfare with points through the Amex Travel portal on your selected airline (or any first or business-class flight). It’s got a much heftier welcome offer of up to 75,000 Amex Membership Rewards points:
50,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after you spend $10,000 on purchases in the first three months of account opening.
25,000 Amex Membership Rewards points after you spend an additional $10,000 on qualifying purchases within the same time frame
That’s enough for a round-trip flight to Europe.

Elite car rental status with Avis, Executive status with National Car Rental and Gold Plus Rewards with Hertz

Terms & Limitations apply
For a limited time until November 6, 2019, with the Amex Business Gold Card, you’ll earn up to $500 in statement credits for FedEx purchases made in the first three months of account opening. There are no bonus points tied to the intro bonus, but you’ll earn American Express Membership Rewards points for your ongoing spending.
This isn’t the best bonus we’ve seen for the card, but it could be handy for those who spend a lot on shipping with FedEx. If your goal is earning miles and points for free travel, check out our list of the best travel credit cards for better options.
By transferring Amex Express Membership Rewards points to any of Amex’s direct airline and hotel partners for award travel, you can hop the globe for free.
Don’t forget, Amex small business credit cards do not appear on your personal credit report, so opening this card won’t hurt your chances of being approved for any Chase cards because of the 5/24 rule.
